Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has spoken after hearing that her close friend and mentor, Martha Karua, made comments criticizing the burial of the late Raila Odinga. Millie said that if it is true that Martha Karua really said those words, then she is getting ready to respond.
She even joked and said, “If my good friend and mentor Martha Karua said this, then I am doing press-ups to respond to her.” Her words made many people laugh, but they also showed that she is serious about giving her opinion.
Millie Odhiambo and Martha Karua have been friends for many years. Both women are known for their strong voices in politics and for always speaking the truth without fear. They have walked together in many political struggles, especially on matters of justice, democracy, and women’s rights.
That is why many Kenyans were surprised when Millie hinted that she might challenge her mentor over what she said about Raila’s burial.Millie said that she respects Martha Karua very much and still sees her as a teacher and sister in the struggle, but she also believes that some things must be spoken about carefully.
She said that Raila Odinga was not just a politician; he was a great leader, a father, and a respected elder. For that reason, criticizing how he was buried is not right, especially at a time when the family is still hurting and mourning.
She explained that the Odinga family followed Luo traditions during the burial, and those traditions have deep meaning. Millie said that Luo people have their own ways of honoring their dead, and it is not fair for outsiders to judge them.
She said that Baba was buried with respect, love, and dignity, just the way a leader of his status deserved.Millie also said that even though everyone has a right to speak freely, that freedom should come with wisdom and kindness.
She said it hurts to see people, especially those who were once close to Baba, saying bad things about how his burial was done. She ended her message by saying she still values Martha Karua as her mentor and will always respect her, but she will not keep quiet if her words disrespect the memory of Raila Odinga.
