A moving video of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has resurfaced online, touching the hearts of many Kenyans just days after his death.
In the emotional clip, Raila spoke about sacrifice, freedom, and his love for the people of Kenya.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Koothattukulam, India.
Reports said he suffered a heart attack while undergoing care at an Ayurvedic medical centre. The 80-year-old leader had travelled to India two weeks earlier for treatment.
The video, recorded in Mombasa during an ODM meeting a year ago, shows Raila struggling to hold back tears as he spoke to delegates.
“They come to bid me farewell, saying they are going to greet our people. So Kenyans, I am dying—and I am dying on behalf of Kenyans,” he said in a trembling voice.
His words brought silence and tears to the room as many delegates encouraged him to remain strong.
He went on to recall painful moments in Kenya’s political journey, remembering friends who lost their lives while fighting for democracy.
“I feel deep pain when I remember someone you were with comes and tells you, ‘You will not see me again.’ He is taken away and hanged,” Raila said.
He also reminded Kenyans that the 2010 Constitution was not easily achieved but came through great sacrifice.
“We brought the Constitution through the sweat and blood of Kenyans,” he said, referring to reform heroes like Odhiambo Mbai, who died during the fight for justice.
Following his death, Kenyans from all walks of life shared their grief online. Many described him as a man who truly loved his country and never gave up on fighting for equality and fairness.
President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning and ordered flags to fly at half-mast.
He described Raila as a statesman who dedicated his life to making Kenya better. Leaders from Africa and around the world also sent their condolences, calling him a true champion of democracy.
