Renown ODM MP has asked Baringo residents to vote for an independent candidate after KANU Chairman Gideon Moi suddenly quit the senatorial by-election.

The surprise decision came just hours after Moi’s secret meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi. The move has ignited a wave of anger among locals who accuse the government of manipulating the race.

The by-election was called following the death of former Senator Samuel Poghisio in July. Moi had been the strongest challenger to UDA’s Vincent Cheburet Chemitei and was expected to restore KANU’s influence in the Rift Valley. His exit, however, has left many feeling abandoned and betrayed.

KANU Secretary General George Wainaina later confirmed the party would not field any candidate, saying the decision came after “strategic consultations.”

He refused to share more details, raising speculation that Moi’s withdrawal was a result of political pressure from the State House meeting.

Chaos broke out in Kabarnet as angry supporters blocked roads and clashed with police. Protesters waved KANU flags and shouted anti-Ruto slogans while accusing Moi of surrendering to government pressure.

“This is betrayal! Gideon was our only hope,” one protester said amid the unrest.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, known for his fiery tone, took to X to rally residents behind an independent candidate. He told them to “use their vote as a tool of resistance” and not to bow to what he called state control. His message quickly spread online, earning praise from opposition supporters.

Amisi’s remarks have exposed fresh cracks within the Azimio coalition. ODM leaders have remained silent, but the MP’s bold stance reflects growing frustration among grassroots members who feel the opposition is losing its fighting spirit.

Political analysts believe Moi’s withdrawal has handed Ruto’s UDA an easy victory and cemented the president’s grip on the Rift Valley. Still, others warn the decision could spark a protest vote that might surprise the ruling camp.

The Baringo by-election now stands as a test of courage and loyalty. Voters must decide whether to follow political orders or embrace Amisi’s call for defiance through the ballot.
