Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has made a surprising revelation about Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s burial wish, saying he only recently learned that his brother prefers to be laid to rest within 72 hours.

Speaking during a family event in Bondo on Thursday, Oburu admitted he was caught off guard by the declaration, which has now stirred conversations about cultural norms, leadership legacies, and the personal preferences of prominent figures.

“I didn’t know Baba wanted to be buried within three days. I was shocked. We have always discussed politics, strategy, and development, but not this,” Oburu said, noting that the family will respect Raila’s wishes if the time ever comes.

He emphasized that the former Prime Minister has always insisted on a simple, non-extravagant burial, free of political chaos or expensive rituals.

Raila’s position on burial emerged earlier this year when he told a gathering in Siaya that he did not want lengthy ceremonies or political grandstanding at his funeral.

The comment resurfaced after his recent engagements across the continent, where he is pushing to secure leadership at the African Union.

Many supporters online have interpreted his burial stance as an effort to discourage tribal and political exploitation of death in Kenya.

The revelation comes at a time when the Azimio coalition is reorganizing ahead of the 2027 elections and facing internal pressure to define its future beyond Raila’s possible continental role.

Analysts say the burial wish may also reflect Raila’s growing desire to demystify personality cult politics in Kenya, where funerals of political heavyweights often turn into campaign arenas.

Oburu said the family fully understands Raila’s frustration with theatrics around death. “He wants peace, dignity and respect. No drama. That is his message,” he said, urging Kenyans to focus on living leaders, not waiting to glorify them after death.

The disclosure has since triggered discussion online, with many users praising Raila’s humility, while others questioned whether political culture in Kenya is ready for such a radical shift.
