Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has praised candidates and voters who took part in the recent by-elections, saying the exercise showed the country’s strong belief in democracy.

In a detailed message, he commended all aspirants who stepped forward to seek elective positions, noting that offering oneself for leadership is an act of courage and commitment to public service.

Matiang’i singled out the United Opposition candidates who secured several MCA seats in different counties.

He congratulated Douglas Masikonde of Narok Town Ward (DCP), Anthony Kyalo of Mumbuni North Ward (Wiper Patriotic Front), David Wanyoike of Kariobangi North Ward (DCP), Aduda Okwiri of Kisa East Ward (DCP), Jeremiah Ongaro of Ekerenyo Ward (UPA), Chris Osiemo of Nyamaiya Ward (UPA), and Jackson Mogusu of Nyansiongo Ward (PDP).

According to him, the victories of these leaders show that many Kenyans are placing their trust in individuals who stand for service, integrity, and meaningful change.

He also applauded voters who turned out in large numbers across the country.

Matiang’i said their participation reflected a society that values its democratic rights and understands the importance of choosing leaders through the ballot.

He reminded Kenyans that every vote strengthens the country’s democratic foundation.

However, despite the positive spirit shown by voters, Matiang’i raised serious concern about the reports of bribery, intimidation, and violence witnessed in some areas during the by-elections.

He noted that such behaviour threatens the fairness of the electoral process and weakens public confidence in national institutions.
