As the politics towards the 2027 General Election intensify, the opposition in Kenya is grappling with internal upheavals, driven by mistrust among its leaders.
At the center of the turmoil is Jubilee Party Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni.
Deputy DCP leader Cleophas Malala alleged that Jubilee is secretly advancing the agenda of the ruling UDA party, led by President Ruto.
At a DCP meeting in Kiambu last week, Malala warned opposition supporters not to attend Jubilee’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at Ngong Racecourse on Friday.
“That event is meant to weaken DCP’s and Gachagua’s influence in Mt. Kenya. Don’t be part of dividing the Mountain,” Malala warned.
On his alleged support for Dr. Matiang’i, Kioni has maintained that every party has the right to field a presidential candidate, but eventually parties will agree on a single joint flagbearer.
“We will be stronger if every party is solid. We may have different candidates, but in the end, we agree on how to settle on one,” he explained.
But for many in the opposition, the real issue is not just Kioni’s words but the shadow of Uhuru.
Since leaving State House in 2022, Uhuru has been politically quiet, but his influence in Jubilee remains.
It was Uhuru who shielded Kioni from rivals who sought to oust him from the party’s leadership, casting many questions if Jubilee still an independent partner in opposition unity talks, or merely a vessel for the former president’s agenda?
Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, an ally of Kalonzo, said it remains unclear where Jubilee stands politically today.
“There are those who believe Kioni is Uhuru’s emissary, seeking to preserve his political legacy and secure a big voice in the 2027 decisions,” he said.
