President William Ruto on Sunday attended a church service and fundraiser in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, an event that also exposed growing political tensions within the region.
The president joined worshippers at the AIPCA Igegania Gatundu North Diocese for an end-of-year service and a fundraiser aimed at completing the AIPCA Karure Cathedral of Grace.
The visit formed part of Ruto’s continued engagements with Mt Kenya leaders and grassroots supporters.
Several senior leaders were present at the event. They included National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Gatundu North MP Njoroge Kururia, Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a, and Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha. Cabinet Secretaries Alice Wahome and William Kabogo also attended.
However, the gathering took a tense turn when Governor Wamatangi faced a hostile reception from sections of the crowd.
As he rose to address the congregation, loud heckling erupted, with chants and jeers coming mainly from supporters allied to Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a.
The disruption forced the governor to pause several times as security and event marshals tried to calm the crowd.
