Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy party leader today stirred political debate during the funeral service of Raila Odinga’s sister in Bondo after issuing a strong warning to President William Ruto over the performance of the broad-based government.
Addressing mourners, the governor insisted that ODM members would not sit back and watch as promises made to Kenyans go unfulfilled.
He said ODM agreed to work with the government in good faith, expecting President Ruto to deliver on the commitments outlined during the formation of the broad-based administration.
According to him, Kenyans were still waiting for meaningful change, especially on matters touching on the economy, cost of living and national unity.
The governor stressed that ODM’s cooperation was not unconditional. He noted that the party was closely monitoring the government’s progress and that their continued support would depend on President Ruto’s ability to honour his pledges.
He told the gathering that ODM leaders had sacrificed politically to support the broad-based arrangement and therefore expected equal seriousness from the government.
In a statement that attracted murmurs from the mourners, the governor warned that if President Ruto fails to deliver as agreed, ODM would have no option but to shift its political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said that the party would consider working with Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party to form a government, adding that this decision would be guided by the interests of Kenyans and the commitment to improve their lives.
He concluded by urging ODM supporters to remain united as the party continues to assess the political landscape.
He said ODM’s priority remains ensuring that Kenyans benefit from a trustworthy and accountable leadership, whether within the current government framework or through a new alliance in 2027.
