On Tuesday, December 9, at around 7:14 pm, a major power outage affected multiple regions across Kenya, leaving residents in the dark.
The blackout impacted parts of the North Rift, Western Kenya, South Nyanza, and the Central Rift, disrupting homes and businesses.
Kenya Power has confirmed that the outage was caused by an incident on the Kenya-Uganda regional interconnected power network.
The disturbance on this network triggered a fault that affected the electricity system on the Kenyan side.
Among the towns hit by the blackout were Eldoret, Nandi, Kitale, Nakuru, Naivasha, and areas of Nairobi including Ridgeways and Kasarani.
According to Kenya Power, electricity was restored to most of the affected areas within about 30 minutes.
Eldoret and its surroundings, however, remained without power for longer, while teams continued working to restore supply.
The utility company asked residents to remain patient during the restoration process and assured the public that efforts were ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Such outages highlight the challenges of maintaining a regional power network and the need for effective monitoring and response systems.
They also underline the importance of timely maintenance and coordination to ensure reliable electricity supply across the country.
Kenya Power continues to monitor the situation and work on strengthening the network to avoid large-scale disruptions.
Residents have been advised to report any lingering issues while the teams complete their work.
