Speaking during the burial in Lumakanda on Tuesday, Wetang’ula painted a picture of their final encounter amidst mounting political pressure for transparency.
Wetang’ula recounted that on the evening of December 11, after returning from official duties, he met Jirongo and Athletics Kenya official General Tuwei at a venue in Karen, Nairobi. He stated the meeting was brief, as he had an early flight to catch.
“I arrived shortly after 9:00pm. Our discussion was short, and at exactly 9:30pm, I excused myself to prepare for my travel,” Wetang’ula told mourners.
He noted that during their talk, Jirongo pointed out the arrival of former Hamisi MP George Khaniri and his wife nearby, before he departed.
The Speaker described receiving the news of Jirongo’s death the following morning as “devastating,” emphasising their close 38-year friendship marked by regular evening meetings.
His disclosure comes amid intensified calls from fellow leaders for clarity on the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.
Senator Boni Khalwale had directly urged Wetang’ula to reveal what was discussed, while George Khaniri has claimed private investigators viewed CCTV footage suggesting Jirongo was not alone in his car before the crash.
Adding to the scrutiny, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi criticised the government’s silence, demanding accountability over unanswered questions.
The revelations and continued pressure highlight the unresolved speculation lingering over the tragic incident, even as the nation buries the former legislator.
