After 13 years of marriage, she says she finally walked away to save her life and protect her children from cycles of violence, humiliation and economic sabotage.
According to Grace, trouble began when her husband turned possessive and paranoid. What started as arguments over phone calls escalated into public humiliation and brutal attacks.
In one incident, she says her husband forced her out of their house without clothes after accusing her of speaking to another man, who turned out to be her own cousin.
“He called the number, it didn’t go through, and that’s when everything started,” she recalls.
“I was just from showering and only had a towel. He threw me out, the towel fell inside the house and he locked the door. I was naked outside trying to get back in.”
Residents gathered in shock as she stood outside crying and begging to be allowed in. A village elder intervened, demanded the door be opened and eventually confirmed that the man on the phone was indeed her cousin.
Furious neighbours punished her husband for humiliating her, forcing him to pay for her medical treatment and later move out of the estate out of shame.
Grace says that abusive control extended to her jobs. Despite working hard to feed her children, she claims her husband deliberately ensured she lost multiple jobs by following her to workplaces, staging confrontations and feeding her employers with lies.
The third job — which finally gave her financial stability after months of struggle — was also destroyed when her husband stormed into the company and told her foreign boss that Grace was stealing.
“That job was changing our lives,” she says. “He ruined it in less than three months.”
After losing her income, Grace says she began viewing her marriage as a threat to her life. “I asked him why he hated me so much,” she recalls.
“He never answered.”
Six months later, Grace walked out with her children, rebuilt her life alone and vowed never to return. “I left to save my life,” she says. “God gave me grace.”
