Speaking on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at a political rally in Githugi, Mathioya Constituency in Murang’a County, Malala accused security agencies of failing to take action despite what he described as repeated complaints and appeals from opposition leaders.
According to Malala, the alleged incident occurred last week when police officers reportedly disrupted a church service in Othaya, leading to chaos and injuries among worshippers.
He said the situation had angered opposition leaders and supporters across the country, particularly because those affected were women, children, and congregants attending a place of worship.
Malala revealed that the opposition had already sought intervention from the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Kanja, following the incident.
He claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua personally confronted the police boss and urged him to ensure that officers respect places of worship and avoid the use of force against innocent civilians.
“Juzi tulikuwa kwa kanisa tukavurugwa huko, juzi tukaenda kumwona IG Kanja, Gachagua alimwangalia Kanja kwa macho akamwambia awachane na watoto na wamama kanisani,” Malala told the crowd.
He stated that the opposition had issued a deadline for action to be taken against the officers implicated in the alleged attack.
According to Malala, the police have until February 16 to either arrest, investigate, or remove from duty the officers involved.
“Sisi tumesema wale polisi ambao walipiga wamama na watoto kanisani huko Othaya, Rigathi Gachagua amesema tumewapatia mpaka tarehe 16,” he added.
Malala warned that failure to act by the set date would trigger mass demonstrations across the country.

He said the opposition was prepared to organise protests to demand accountability from the police service and the government.
“Tarehe 16 tunarudi kwa IG Kanja na tukipata wale polisi hawajashikwa ama kuachishwa kazi, tutapanga maandamano Kenya mzima,” he declared.
The DCP deputy party leader also linked the incident to what he described as a pattern of excessive force used by police during recent protests involving young demonstrators, commonly referred to as Gen Z protesters.

He insisted that officers accused of brutality during those protests must also be held accountable.
“Pia wale polisi walia Gen Z wakati wa maandamano washikwe pia,” he said.
Malala further criticised President William Ruto over recent remarks regarding compensation for victims of protest-related violence.

He challenged the Head of State to provide clear timelines and specific figures instead of what he termed as vague promises.
“Jana Ruto anaendelea kusema wale Gen Z ambao waliumia ama kuuawa kwa maandamano watafanyiwa compensation, namwambia Ruto awache uongo na aseme siku atacompensate hao watu na ni pesa ngapi?” Malala posed.
He concluded his address by assuring supporters that the opposition remains united and ready to mobilise across the country in pursuit of what he called justice and accountability.

Malala maintained that respect for places of worship and the protection of women and children should be a priority for security agencies.
The remarks come amid rising political tensions between the government and sections of the opposition, with calls for accountability and police reforms gaining momentum in recent weeks.
