Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has called for a massive demonstration in Nairobi’s Central Business District, urging supporters to turn up in large numbers on Friday, February 20.

Speaking during a political rally on Monday, Gachagua announced that he is targeting more than 100,000 people to assemble and march to the office of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

He warned that the planned protest could bring the city to a standstill if the turnout meets expectations.

The planned march follows a failed attempt by opposition leaders to secure a meeting with the Inspector General at Jogoo House earlier on Monday.

The delegation had sought to raise concerns over alleged police brutality, selective enforcement of the law, and what they described as harassment of opposition supporters.

After being denied access, opposition leaders vowed to intensify pressure on authorities, insisting that they will not relent in their push for accountability.

Gachagua reiterated that the upcoming demonstration will be peaceful but firm in demanding justice for victims of alleged police excesses.

The leaders also condemned the disruption of an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally in Kitengela on Sunday, claiming police interference undermined constitutional freedoms, including the right to assemble and express political views.

Meanwhile, Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement, warned that the opposition could escalate the matter beyond Kenya’s borders.

He referenced the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, suggesting that alleged human rights violations could attract international scrutiny if not addressed locally.

Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the planned demonstration. However, security agencies typically require organisers to notify them in advance to facilitate security planning and maintain public order.
