Residents of Donholm estate in Nairobi were forced to flee their homes on Friday morning after a gas explosion sparked a major fire near a busy commercial area.

The fire broke out near the Total Petrol Station in Donholm, opposite Triple K, sending thick smoke into the air and causing panic across the estate. Several loud explosions were heard within minutes, prompting families to rush out of their houses for safety.

Preliminary information indicates that the fire may have started inside a local eatery. The flames quickly spread to nearby structures due to the close proximity of the buildings.

Residents said the fire first consumed the hotel before spreading to an adjacent clinic. It later reached a gas cylinder depot located next to the premises, making the situation more dangerous.

Once the fire reached the gas depot, several cylinders reportedly exploded one after another. This intensified the blaze and increased the level of destruction in the area.

The explosions sent gas cylinders and debris flying across the scene. Windows of nearby buildings were shattered, and several vehicles parked close to the site were damaged.
