Tension briefly flared at Tononoka Grounds after a group of rowdy youths attempted to disrupt a political rally organised by a faction allied to Oburu Odinga.

In videos circulating online, several youths were seen pelting stones and throwing dust toward the dais where leaders were seated, causing a momentary scare among politicians and their supporters.

The commotion forced security personnel to quickly shield the leaders as police officers present at the venue moved in to restore order.

One of the leaders addressing the crowd was heard questioning the motive behind the disruption, asking, “Nani wanatupa mawe?” as he urged the youths to stop the chaos and allow the rally to proceed peacefully.

Despite the brief disturbance, calm was restored and the event continued, with leaders addressing hundreds of residents who had turned up for the gathering.

The Tononoka incident comes amid heightened political tension in the country. Just days earlier, supporters of Edwin Sifuna were teargassed in Kitengela during the Linda Mwananchi tour organised by a faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

According to reports, the Kitengela rally had attracted large crowds and was progressing without incident before police lobbed tear gas, dispersing supporters.

Sifuna later criticised the move, terming it excessive and questioning the motive behind disrupting what he described as a peaceful assembly of ODM members.

The back-to-back incidents have intensified debate over political freedoms, security management at rallies, and the conduct of both supporters and law enforcement agencies.

Police have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the Tononoka disruption. However, security agencies have repeatedly urged political actors and their supporters to maintain peace during public gatherings.
