President Ruto Quietly Relocates To New-Look State House After Ksh 11B Overhaul

President William Ruto has officially moved back into the main State House building in Nairobi, ending months of operating from the Presidential Pavilion and regional State Lodges.

The return comes after a massive modernization project that has completely transformed the silhouette of Kenya's most powerful address.

For nearly two years, the "House on the Hill" was off-limits as contractors worked to strip away its colonial-era features.

Bye-Bye Red Tiles: The New "White House" Look
The most striking change that has Kenyans talking is the roof. The iconic red-tiled, sloping roof—a signature of British architect Herbert Baker since 1907—is gone.

In its place is a sleek, modern flat-roof system. This change, combined with a fresh coat of brilliant white paint, has led many netizens to compare the new design to the United States' White House.

Key Changes to the Building:

The Roof: Shifted from red tiles to a modern flat-top design.
The Porch: The dual drive-through entrance has been replaced by a singular, grand central porch.
The Flags: The Presidential Standard and National flags, which used to fly from the roof, have been moved to independent masts at the front.

The Multi-Billion Shilling Question
While the government maintains that the renovations were necessary for structural stability and "symbolic independence," the cost remains a hot topic.

The project is part of a larger KSh 11.5 billion plan to refurbish various State Houses and Lodges across the country. In the 2025/2026 budget alone, nearly Ksh 900 million was allocated to continue these "facelifts."

Critics, however, argue that the timing is insensitive. With many Kenyans struggling under a high cost of living and recent budget cuts in other sectors, some view the renovation as an unnecessary luxury.
