“This Is What I Meant”: Ex-Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi Clarifies He Is Yet to Exit the Political Arena, Signals Change of Tact

Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has clarified that his recent remarks about stepping away from “active politics” were not meant to signal a complete exit from public life, but rather a shift in how he intends to participate in Kenya’s political space.

Speaking in a fresh interview weeks after announcing what many interpreted as retirement, the veteran politician explained that he is transitioning from high-intensity electoral contests to what he calls “low volume politics” — a role focused on mentorship, advisory work, and behind-the-scenes influence.

Murungi, the founder of the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), said politics remains central to his life, but his approach is changing after more than three decades in leadership.

“I have stepped away from the high-temperature, high-stakes elective contests, but politics is in my blood,” Murungi said.

“I will now be offering guidance, coaching leaders on life after office, and pushing for happier and more effective workplaces. That is my new tact.”

His initial statement in late January came during a low-key event where he reflected on his long career in public service.

Murungi has served as a Member of Parliament, a Cabinet Minister in the Mwai Kibaki administration, Meru Senator, and later Meru Governor from 2017 to 2022.

He lost his re-election bid in 2022 to Kawira Mwangaza in a hotly contested race that reshaped Meru’s political landscape.

Murungi has previously spoken about the emotional toll of that loss, comparing the period after the election to a form of depression often experienced by leaders after leaving office.

However, his latest comments make it clear that withdrawing completely from politics was never his intention.

According to Murungi, his new role will involve mentoring upcoming leaders, advising politicians on navigating public life and life after leadership, and contributing to political discourse without being directly on the ballot.

The clarification comes at a time when political activity across the country is gradually intensifying ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Alliances are shifting, new players are emerging, and veteran politicians are reassessing how they can remain relevant without necessarily seeking elective positions.

In Meru County, Murungi’s influence remains significant despite his 2022 defeat. His experience and networks across the region and nationally position him as a potential behind-the-scenes figure capable of shaping political direction and supporting emerging leaders.

Sources close to the DEP Party were quick to dismiss reports suggesting that Murungi had fully retired from politics, describing the earlier interpretation as a misunderstanding of his message.

“Kiraitu did not retire from politics. He is simply evolving with it,” a party insider said.

“He still has a lot to offer, especially in terms of guidance and advisory support to upcoming leaders.”
