Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has renewed his criticism of DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting tribal politics.

Wambugu’s remarks come amid fresh controversy surrounding Gachagua after he allegedly made disparaging comments about Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda’s Indian heritage.

He has described the remarks as unacceptable and blamed senior political figures allied to Gachagua for remaining silent instead of calling him.

He has questioned why leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka have not publicly challenged Gachagua, suggesting their silence may be tied to expectations of political support in the 2027 General Election.

“Gachagua is a tribal racist. And it’s a shame that national leaders like Matiangi, Kalonzo, Eugene and Natembeya are giving him space to spew tribal hatred and propagate negative ethnicity.”

Wambugu, who previously worked closely with Gachagua before his 2024 impeachment, further warned those aligning themselves with the former Deputy President that they should not rely on promises he cannot fulfill.

According to him, Gachagua does not have the political influence he claims in the Mt Kenya region.

“Even if the reason is because of the false promise that he will hand you the Mt Kenya vote, it remains wrong,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Gachagua has faced similar accusations in the past.

Critics have cited instances where he appeared to suggest that government development should favour regions that supported William Ruto, likening the administration to a shareholding arrangement in which only loyal supporters benefit.
