The man trusted to protect him may have helped orchestrate his death. That is the shocking claim now emerging in court over the killing of Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Investigators say the slain MP’s final hours were not random violence. Instead, prosecutors describe a carefully planned operation involving several suspects, including the lawmaker’s own bodyguard.
On the evening of April 30, 2025, the MP was travelling in Nairobi when gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
According to prosecutors, the bodyguard allegedly worked with other suspects behind the scenes and used his trusted position to expose the MP to his attackers.
CCTV footage reviewed by detectives showed the lawmaker’s vehicle being trailed by a car and a motorcycle in the hours leading to the fatal shooting.
Authorities say at least five suspects were involved in the plot. Among them are individuals accused of financing the operation, supplying the weapon and carrying out the shooting.
Court documents identify the bodyguard as one of the people charged alongside the alleged hitman and several accomplices.
The case is no longer just about a political assassination. Prosecutors argue it is a story of betrayal from within the MP’s closest security circle.
The trial is still ongoing, and the court will ultimately decide the fate of those accused.
