According to available sources of news, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially recalibrated his 2027 strategy.
Instead of aiming for the top seat himself, Gachagua has declared he is ready to play the role of the ultimate "Kingmaker," vowing to back any candidate the opposition settles on to ensure President William Ruto serves only one term.
This isn’t just a change in plans, it’s a calculated tactical retreat designed to consolidate a fragmented opposition.
For months, Gachagua has been a fixture on the rally circuit, traversing the country and building a narrative of redemption after his fallout with the current administration.
By stepping aside as a direct contender, he effectively removes the ego-clash obstacle that often prevents opposition unity.
The opposition lineup is already heavy with heavyweights. We are looking at a formidable roster that includes: Fred Matiang’i & Kalonzo Musyoka who are very strong seasoned veterans with established bases.
Eugene Wamalwa & George Natembeya will also be bringing the Western and Rift Valley influence.
Justin Muturi & Peter Munya also are key players in the Mt. Kenya and Meru voting blocs. Gachagua’s u-turn is essentially the glue for this coalition.
By promising his full backing to whoever emerges as the frontrunner, he brings with him a massive, disgruntled voting bloc that feels betrayed by the current regime.
Logic dictates that a divided opposition is a gift to an incumbent. Gachagua seems to have realized that his path to the presidency was narrow, but his path to being the opposition chief who unseats the President is wide open.
His grassroots mobilization skills, combined with the administrative experience of the likes of Matiang’i and the regional pull of Kalonzo, creates a perfect storm scenario for 2027.
