Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has revealed a strategic shift within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), announcing that the party will field candidates across all elective positions in the 2027 General Election except the presidency.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Joho stated that ODM is considering a negotiated political arrangement with President William Ruto that could see the party support his re-election bid.
The former Mombasa governor noted that such a move is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring political stability.
“ODM remains a strong national party with structures across the country. We will be on the ballot in all positions, but on the presidency, we are engaging in discussions that could inform our final direction,” Joho said.
The remarks are likely to spark debate within ODM ranks and the wider Azimio coalition, which has traditionally positioned itself in opposition to Ruto’s administration. Analysts say the declaration signals a possible realignment in Kenya’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
Joho, a key ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, did not provide details on the nature or stage of the negotiations, but emphasized that any agreement would prioritize national interests over partisan considerations.
Political observers argue that ODM’s decision to field candidates in other positions demonstrates its intent to maintain grassroots influence while keeping its options open at the presidential level.
If formalized, the arrangement could significantly reshape alliances, potentially blurring the lines between government and opposition politics. However, it remains unclear how ODM supporters and key stakeholders will respond to the prospect of backing Ruto, a leader they previously opposed.
As the 2027 race slowly takes shape, Joho’s statement underscores the fluid and unpredictable nature of Kenya’s political alliances.
