President William Ruto on Tuesday sparked excitement and political debate after publicly recognising Lang’ata MP Jalang'o as the “Nairobi Senator” during his address at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute in Dagoretti South.
The Head of State had been speaking to students and residents about government development programmes when he shifted to acknowledge leaders present.
In a moment that left the crowd cheering and chanting, President Ruto referred to Jalang’o as Nairobi Senator, drawing loud reactions from the audience.
The remarks come amid growing political tensions in the capital, where the current Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna, has been openly critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Sifuna, a vocal member of the opposition, has consistently challenged the government’s policies both inside and outside Parliament.
Observers say President Ruto’s statement could signal shifting political alliances in Nairobi as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the next General Election.
Jalang’o, who has recently drawn closer to President Ruto despite being elected on an ODM ticket, has also declared his intention to run for Nairobi Governor.
His announcement has added a fresh twist to the city’s political landscape, setting the stage for what is expected to be a heated contest.
Political analysts argue that the President’s public recognition of Jalang’o may boost the MP’s visibility and strengthen his influence among Nairobi voters.
However, it also raises questions about the future relationship between the ruling coalition and opposition leaders in the capital.
As the 2027 race slowly takes shape, Nairobi remains a key battleground, with emerging rivalries and unexpected endorsements shaping early political narratives.
