A family in Kilifi is in deep sorrow after a tragic incident took the lives of a mother and her young daughter after Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

The two belonged to a Muslim family marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan before the accident occurred.

According to the family, they were observing Eid al-Fitr as part of their faith, and their daughter stepped outside to play after eating before she was electrocuted.

The incident happened in the Maweni area during heavy rainfall.

The husband, Mohamed Aldulhabashir, said the tragedy occurred at around 10 in the morning.

He explained that his daughter had gone out to play when a power pole collapsed, leaving live wires exposed.

The girl was electrocuted instantly.

Her mother rushed out in an effort to rescue her but was also electrocuted.

Both died at the scene, leaving the family in grief. One of the children, identified as Aisha, survived and is currently undergoing treatment at Malindi Sub County Hospital.

Relatives and local leaders have blamed the tragedy on weak and poorly maintained electricity infrastructure.

A family member, Fatuma Musa, appealed to the government to replace old wooden poles with stronger concrete ones to avoid similar incidents.

Area leaders also called on Kenya Power to take swift action and ensure proper upkeep of power lines, noting that residents have raised concerns in the past.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Malindi Sub County Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.

Burial arrangements are being made in line with Islamic traditions.
