Fresh debate has emerged over accountability in Nairobi leadership after Gideon Kimaiyo urged Edwin Sifuna to ensure that the county government is properly held responsible following the recent floods that affected several parts of the capital.

Kimaiyo said that Senator Sifuna should apply the same level of scrutiny to Johnson Sakaja that he often applies to other governors when carrying out oversight duties in Senate committees.

According to Kimaiyo, the heavy rains that recently hit Nairobi exposed major challenges in drainage systems and urban planning, which fall under the responsibility of the county government.

He argued that leadership accountability should be consistent regardless of political affiliation or personal relationships among leaders.

Kimaiyo pointed out that Sifuna has previously been vocal in demanding accountability from governors appearing before Senate committees. Because of this, he said the Nairobi Senator should also demonstrate the same commitment when dealing with issues affecting residents in his own county.

The recent rains caused flooding in several estates across Nairobi, disrupting transport and business activities while leaving many residents struggling to move through waterlogged streets.

In some areas, homes and small businesses were affected as drainage systems struggled to cope with the volume of water during the heavy downpour.

Observers say the floods have once again highlighted the need for improved urban planning, proper drainage infrastructure, and better emergency preparedness within the city.

Kimaiyo noted that the Senate plays a key oversight role over county governments and that the public expects senators to ensure that governors are held accountable for service delivery.

Political analysts say the comments reflect the growing pressure on leaders to address recurring flooding problems in Nairobi, especially during the rainy season when the city often experiences disruptions.

As the debate continues, many Nairobi residents are calling for long-term solutions to the flooding problem while urging leaders at both county and national levels to work together to protect the city from future disasters.
