Upset in Bondo: Mama Ida Odinga Heckled as She Defends New ODM-UDA Roadmap

The tension peaked during the thanksgiving service at ACK St. Michael’s Cathedral in Bondo when Mama Ida Odinga stood to address the congregation.

As she began a section of her speech defending the younger generation of ODM leaders—a move seen as an attempt to bridge the gap between the Oburu-led Linda Ground and the Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi factions she was met with a barrage of boos and heckles from rowdy youth, reportedly from the neighboring Rarieda constituency.

The hostility forced the Mother of the Nation to cut her speech short, an unprecedented scene in the heart of the Odinga family's traditional stronghold.

President William Ruto, who was seated nearby alongside PS Dr. Ouma Oluga and Senator Oburu Oginga, did not take the disruption lightly.

Taking to the podium shortly after, the President issued a blistering lecture to the youth, characterizing the heckling as a sign of backward politics and a lack of respect for elders.

Ruto warned the Bondo residents that they should not allow themselves to be used as political tools or bloggers for those seeking to destabilize the country’s development agenda, specifically defending Ida as a statesman who deserves absolute decorum.

The heckling is being analyzed as a direct reaction to the recent internal purges within ODM, where Edwin Sifuna was removed as Secretary General for refusing to endorse the Broad-Based roadmap.

The Rarieda youth, who have increasingly aligned themselves with the Linda Mwananchi movement, appeared to view Ida's defense of young leaders as a veiled attempt to sanitize the new, state-friendly party hierarchy.

This digital rebellion signifies that the grassroots base in Siaya is no longer a safe room for the party leadership, especially as the March 7 anniversary of the Ruto-Raila MoU passes without the tangible reforms promised to the youth.

The events in Bondo serve as a mechanical necessity check for the UDA-ODM alliance ahead of their formal Tuesday meeting.

While Oburu Oginga continues to push for a formal merger and zoning, the hostility toward Mama Ida suggests that the Software of the deal—the hearts and minds of the voters—is yet to be won.

As Ruto promises to take the region to Singapore through Bondo, the growing Wantam (One-Term) sentiment in the Lake region suggests that the road to 2027 will be defined by more than just high-level handshakes and digital hubs.
