President William Ruto has fired back at the United Opposition and sections of the public who have criticised him and his administration over his viral remarks over the week targeted at the opposition.

Speaking on Friday, March 20, during the Eid-Ul-Fitr luncheon at Kisumu State Lodge, Ruto told the country that he would not waver in addressing the opposition, warning that they had failed to engage him on matters of national priority.

“There is nothing unpresidential about what I said. I only told them to watch their weight; I have not abused anyone. I emphasised that we should focus on policies, which they did not listen to, and I want to warn them, this is just the beginning,” Ruto said.

“Do not mind them; I will deal with them. I will deal with the tribalists and hate mongers. They have insulted and abused me for two years consecutively. So if I respond, they now spin narratives that I body-shamed them,” he added.

Ruto maintained that he will continue his messages against the opposition until unresolved matters, such as past killings, bodies found in rivers like River Yala, and the disinheritance of widows, are firmly addressed.

“I have not used any abusive language, and they are the ones who started this,” the President stated, reinforcing his earlier stance where he said that he will commit one per cent of his time to engage the opposition.

The remarks come as the family of late blogger Maureen Githaiga Kinyua formally wrote on Thursday to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) demanding a fresh inquest into her 2019 death, which they insist was not a road accident as officially recorded.

The family’s lawyers submitted a letter on March 19, 2026, outlining six key reasons why Maureen’s death in the Mataga area may have been a carefully planned killing disguised as a boda boda accident.

According to the letter, Maureen was allegedly lured to Mataga by a female friend with suspected links to a senior political figure from the Mount Kenya region and remained there until after 6pm.

When she tried to leave, the woman reportedly called her brother, a boda boda operator, and gave him specific instructions on where to drop Maureen, suggesting prior coordination.

The boda boda rider vanished almost immediately after the incident and only returned when summoned by the area base commander. The motorcycle allegedly involved had no visible damage, contradicting the official road accident narrative.

The family further pointed out a penetration wound in Maureen’s forehead, which was not acknowledged in the autopsy report.

The letter also noted that Maureen’s mobile phone disappeared after her death, and the wife of the senior political figure visited the scene shortly after the incident, surveying the area briefly before leaving, raising suspicions of coordination and cover-up.

The case has resurfaced nearly seven years later, with the family calling for accountability. Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has publicly denied any involvement, describing Maureen’s death as an accident near Sagana Catholic Church on May 24, 2019.
