Political tension rose sharply in Emurua Dikirr after residents broke into loud “Wantam” chants during a politically charged moment linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s message delivered through a phone call ahead of the constituency’s highly anticipated parliamentary by-election.

The emotionally charged gathering drew large crowds who had assembled to listen to Gachagua’s remarks in support of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Vincent Kibet Rotich.

The atmosphere quickly turned symbolic of the deep political competition unfolding in the region, with supporters displaying visible enthusiasm for the opposition-aligned campaign.

Speaking through the phone connection, Gachagua thanked residents for what he described as their firm political stand and urged them to turn out in large numbers during the vote.

He framed the by-election as a crucial moment for the constituency, emphasizing that the outcome would shape local leadership and development priorities.

He strongly endorsed Vincent Kibet Rotich, describing him as a determined and outspoken leader capable of transforming Emurua Dikirr.

Gachagua further compared Rotich’s political energy to that of former legislator Johanna Ngeno, suggesting that he possesses the resilience needed to effectively represent the constituency’s interests.

According to Gachagua, the DCP candidate represents a new wave of leadership focused on grassroots concerns, accountability, and stronger representation of local voices in national politics. He urged voters to remain vigilant and ensure high turnout during the election.

However, as his remarks continued, sections of the crowd repeatedly interrupted with loud “Wantam” chants, a slogan that has increasingly become associated with political dissent and opposition messaging in recent rallies.

The chants grew louder, reflecting heightened political emotions and signaling strong enthusiasm among supporters gathered at the event.

Observers say the moment highlighted the shifting political dynamics in parts of the Rift Valley region, where competition between government-aligned candidates and emerging opposition-backed movements has intensified ahead of upcoming elections and by-elections.

Gachagua used the opportunity to express confidence that the DCP Party was on course for victory, insisting that the momentum on the ground was in their favour.

He called on supporters to remain focused and ensure every vote counted, framing the contest as a defining moment for the constituency’s political direction.

The Emurua Dikirr by-election has increasingly attracted national attention due to its symbolic importance in testing party strength, voter sentiment, and emerging political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.

As campaigning reaches its final stages, both sides continue to mobilize heavily, with analysts closely watching the outcome as a potential indicator of broader political trends in the region.
