Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised the academic qualifications of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate for the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, saying the party is committed to presenting educated and competent leaders to voters.

Speaking during the unveiling of candidate Samuel Ngotho at the party headquarters, Gachagua described him as a highly qualified individual capable of delivering effective leadership to the people of Ol Kalou.

“I am happy with the quality of candidate DCP is presenting to people of Ol Kalou. He is a graduate of Agricultural Economics from the University of Nairobi,” Gachagua said during the event.

The former deputy president stated that the DCP party intends to prioritize candidates with strong academic and professional backgrounds, arguing that such leaders are better equipped to address economic and social challenges affecting ordinary citizens.

According to Gachagua, leadership should increasingly focus on competence, professionalism, and the ability to formulate practical solutions for wananchi rather than relying solely on political popularity.

During his speech, Gachagua also appeared to criticize some leaders associated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance party, accusing them of lacking seriousness and capability in leadership.

In remarks that sparked reactions from supporters attending the event, he said:

“It is the first step of getting away from Tugeges — the Kawanjikus, Wamakeki, Wamafocho, Wamatinga, Wamacukuru…”

The comments were interpreted by observers as a political jab directed at rival politicians within the Kenya Kwanza political space, reflecting the increasingly confrontational tone between Gachagua and leaders aligned to President William Ruto’s administration.

Samuel Ngotho, the newly unveiled DCP candidate, previously worked at the Office of the Deputy President before Gachagua’s impeachment and subsequent political fallout with the government.

Political analysts say the Ol Kalou contest is likely to attract significant attention because it may serve as an early test of Gachagua’s political influence in the Mt Kenya region following his split from sections of the ruling coalition.

The DCP candidate is expected to face strong competition from the UDA candidate as political rivalry intensifies ahead of the by-election.
