A section of political leaders from Western Kenya has intensified calls for the region to secure the deputy president position ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that the community deserves stronger representation in national leadership.
During a political engagement in Bumula Constituency, lawmakers allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement reportedly proposed Wycliffe Oparanya as the most suitable candidate from the Luhya community to deputize President William Ruto in the next election cycle.
Among leaders linked to the push were Jack Wamboka, Majimbo Kalasinga, and John Waluke.
The leaders argued that Western Kenya’s voting strength and continued participation in national coalitions should translate into a more prominent role within government structures.
They further emphasized the need for unity within the region, warning that internal divisions have historically weakened Western Kenya’s bargaining power during national political negotiations.
According to the lawmakers, consolidating support behind a single influential figure could significantly strengthen the region’s position ahead of 2027.
Supporters of Oparanya pointed to his long political experience, administrative record, and grassroots influence as qualities that could make him an attractive national candidate.
Political analysts say the renewed debate over the deputy president position highlights growing regional realignments as communities seek strategic advantages before the next election.
Observers also note that the discussions reflect increasing pressure on national coalitions to accommodate regional interests as parties begin early negotiations over future power-sharing arrangements.
The push comes at a time when several political factions across the country are actively reorganizing ahead of 2027, with leaders attempting to position themselves within possible coalition structures.
Analysts believe Western Kenya’s role could become especially important in future coalition talks because of the region’s large voting population and influence in national politics.
However, questions remain over whether competing political interests within the Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition formations will allow consensus around a single Western Kenya candidate for the deputy presidency.
The growing endorsement of Oparanya now adds another layer to the broader political calculations already shaping the country’s evolving 2027 succession debate.
