Siaya Governor James Orengo has offered fresh insight into how Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna rose to become Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), describing the move as a deliberate strategy aimed at reshaping the party’s future leadership structure.

According to Orengo, Sifuna’s elevation was not accidental or politically imposed, but part of a broader plan to inject youthful energy and modern political communication into the party’s top leadership.

Speaking about the transition, Orengo explained that ODM leaders recognized the need for a strong and articulate figure capable of defending the party both legally and politically during a period of increasing national competition.

He noted that party insiders wanted someone who could connect with younger voters while also remaining loyal to ODM’s long-standing principles and traditions.

“Sifuna demonstrated consistency, courage, and loyalty during difficult political moments,” Orengo reportedly explained while discussing the reasoning behind the decision.

The veteran politician said the selection process involved extensive internal consultations among senior party officials, who evaluated several potential candidates before eventually rallying behind Sifuna.

According to Orengo, one of the key factors that worked in Sifuna’s favor was his performance during public debates and national political engagements, where he emerged as one of ODM’s most aggressive and visible defenders.

Party strategists also reportedly viewed Sifuna as a leader capable of modernizing ODM’s communication machinery at a time when political battles were increasingly shifting to digital platforms and real-time public engagement.

Political observers say the appointment reflected ODM’s attempt to balance experience with generational transition as the party prepares for future electoral contests.

By promoting a younger and media-savvy leader into such a critical position, ODM appeared to signal willingness to move away from strict seniority-based leadership structures in favor of merit and public influence.

Analysts note that Sifuna’s legal background and grassroots political appeal made him attractive to party leaders searching for someone who could energize supporters while effectively countering political opponents.

The revelations by Orengo come amid continuing debates within ODM over leadership succession, party identity, and future alliances following the reduced active role of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga in day-to-day party operations.

As internal discussions continue, Sifuna’s rise is increasingly being viewed as part of a larger political strategy designed to prepare ODM for long-term survival and competitiveness in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
