Kenya's opposition could head into the 2027 General Election under a completely new political banner after Democracy for Citizens Party official Peter Mbae hinted that the coalition is considering abandoning the Azimio la Umoja name in favour of a fresh identity.
Speaking on the ongoing reorganisation of the opposition, Mbae suggested that discussions are at an advanced stage and that the coalition is looking at a political brand that better reflects its current membership and future ambitions.
His remarks have fueled speculation that the opposition's campaign against President William Ruto will be anchored on a new coalition rather than the Azimio outfit that contested the 2022 General Election.
The possibility of dropping the Azimio name comes amid continued negotiations involving several opposition leaders including Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang'i and other key figures who have been holding consultations on how to present a united front ahead of the next polls.
Mbae indicated that while the coalition remains focused on uniting opposition forces, its leaders are equally determined to establish an identity that resonates with voters and reflects the political realities of 2027.
Although he did not disclose the proposed name, he suggested that an official announcement would be made at the appropriate time.
The debate over the coalition's identity has been ongoing for months.
Earlier, Martha Karua revealed that the opposition had already reserved a new coalition name while some leaders proposed retaining Azimio with modifications. Others argued that a complete rebranding would better signal a fresh political beginning.
Apart from the coalition's name, another major issue under discussion is the process of selecting a single presidential flag bearer.
Mbae has previously maintained that the opposition will take its time before unveiling its candidate, arguing that delaying the announcement will help preserve unity and deny political rivals the opportunity to target one individual too early.
Political analysts believe the coalition's eventual decision on both its name and presidential candidate will play a significant role in shaping the 2027 electoral contest.
A new identity could help the opposition project itself as a renewed movement while bringing together leaders from different political parties under a common platform.
With coalition talks continuing behind closed doors, Kenyans are now waiting to see whether the opposition will indeed retire the Azimio brand and unveil a new political vehicle as it prepares for one of the country's most closely watched elections.
