A significant political rift has emerged within the Council of Governors following a noticeable absence of several Mount Kenya governors during a condolence visit to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, where the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was born and later laid to rest.

The council had traveled to offer their respects to the Odinga family after the opposition leader’s recent passing, an event that has drawn national and international attention.

However, the absence of key leaders from the Mount Kenya region sparked widespread discussion, especially in light of recent comments made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

A video that circulated on social media days earlier captured Kahiga in a jubilant mood, allegedly celebrating Raila’s death while claiming that President William Ruto had neglected the Mount Kenya region in favor of development projects in Nyanza and Western Kenya.

In the video, Kahiga is heard attributing Raila’s death to divine intervention, remarks that provoked strong criticism and public condemnation across the political divide.

During the Bondo condolence visit led by the Council of Governors, governors from various regions were present to express solidarity and offer comfort to the bereaved family. Yet, the absence of several prominent Mount Kenya governors was conspicuous.

Those who did not attend include Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, and Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, among others.

Political analysts suggest the boycott may reflect simmering tensions between Mount Kenya leaders and the broader national political landscape, particularly regarding perceptions of resource allocation and political influence.

The development has further fueled debate over national unity, political diplomacy, and the evolving dynamics of Kenya’s regional alliances.
