Kenya was formally divided into eight regions namely Nyanza, Western, Coast, Nairobi, Central, Eastern and North Eastern.
These regions were called provinces before the inception of devolution by the 2010 constitution.
Most of these regions have their political kingpins and often vote in blocks. Currently, only three regions have powerful kingpins.
These regions are Rift Valley(William Ruto), Central(Rigathi Gachagua)and Lower Eastern(Kalonzo Musyoka).
In the past elections, the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was enjoying massive support in majority of the region that didn't have kingpins like Coast, Western and North Eastern.
Since the former Prime Minister is no more, the regions have remained for grabs.
As we head to the next general election, the broadbased government and the opposition seems to have identify their strongholds due to the current political alignments.
For instance, Central and Eastern are likely to back the opposition while Western, Rift Valley and Nyanza are likely to support President William Ruto.
Another region where the opposition might beat the broadbased is the Coast. The region used to vote for Raila in large numbers when they were in the same camp with Kalonzo Musyoka.
In 2013 and 2017 general elections, Kalonzo was Raila's running mate in the presidential race.
In 2022, the Wiper Patriotic Front party leader accepted to play third fiddle and allowed Martha Karua to be Raila's running mate.
Being that Raila is not there, Kalonzo Musyoka might find it easy to inherit Raila's support in the area since they have been there with him several times before.
Therefore , the united opposition might beat the broadbased government in Coast, Central and Eastern regions in the next general election.
