Former presidential candidate and gospel musician Reuben Kigame has called out media owners in Kenya for failing to pay journalists fairly and on time.

He said that many journalists work hard to gather news and bring in profits for media houses, yet they continue to live in poverty and stress because their salaries are delayed or never paid.

Kigame shared his concerns in a post on X on Saturday night. He asked Kenyans to remember journalists in their prayers, saying that many of them are suffering silently.

According to him, some journalists face depression and mental health problems because they cannot pay their bills, rent, or take care of their families.

“As we go to our worship places, let us think of journalists, editors, and reporters who are going through economic pain due to unpaid salaries. Some of them are even losing hope in life,” he wrote.

He added that it is time for media owners to care about their workers and treat them with dignity.

Kigame also shared a sad story about the late Catherine Kasavuli, one of Kenya’s most respected news presenters.

He said Kasavuli struggled financially towards the end of her life, even though she helped make many TV stations popular.

He revealed that she could not afford rent for the small servant’s quarter where she lived before she died.

Kasavuli passed away in December 2022 after being diagnosed with cervical cancer. Kigame said he was among the few people who helped her by giving what little he had.

“She made media houses rich, but when she died, she had nothing,” he said.

After her death, President William Ruto contributed Ksh1 million to support her funeral and settled her hospital bill.

Kigame’s message has started conversations online about how journalists are treated in Kenya. Many people agreed with him and said journalists deserve fair pay, respect, and better working conditions.

Others said it is painful that famous media personalities can suffer in silence because of unpaid salaries.

Kigame ended his message by urging media houses to act now and protect the people who inform the nation every day.
