Kenya is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away in India after suffering a cardiac arrest on the morning of Wednesday, October 15.

Reports indicate that he collapsed during a morning walk before being rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed his death at around 9:52 a.m. Indian time.

Medical officials in Kerala’s Ernakulam district said the cardiac arrest was sudden and that all efforts to resuscitate him failed.

Raila had travelled to Koothattukulam for specialised Ayurvedic treatment, accompanied by close family members, including his daughter.

Raila’s death marks the end of a remarkable era in Kenya’s political history.

For over four decades, he stood at the forefront of the country’s fight for democracy, justice and good governance.

His leadership, resilience and unmatched influence earned him the respect of both allies and rivals.

As Kenyans reflect on his legacy, one emotional moment that has resurfaced is his last message to his wife, Ida Odinga, which he wrote during her birthday.

In the heartfelt note, Raila expressed gratitude for her love and support, saying that being married to her for five decades had brought him great joy.

He described her as the love of his life and the pillar of their family.

World leaders, political figures and ordinary citizens have joined Kenyans in expressing deep sorrow over Raila’s passing. Many described him as a true statesman and a champion of the people.

Preparations are underway to bring his body back to Kenya, where he is expected to be accorded a state funeral befitting his stature.

Raila’s final words to Ida and his lifelong dedication to Kenya will forever remain in the hearts of millions who admired him.
