Fresh details have emerged from Indian authorities on the final moments of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away while undergoing treatment in Kerala, India.
According to police reports, Raila was taking a morning walk when the sad incident happened.
He was walking together with his sister, his child, and his personal doctor.
The walk took place near the Ayurvedic hospital in Koothattukulam, where he had been receiving specialised treatment.
It is the same hospital his daughter once visited in 2017 for eye treatment after she lost her sight.
Police said Raila began experiencing breathing problems during the walk.
Witnesses described how he appeared weak and started collapsing at around 7:45 in the morning, Indian time.
Those accompanying him quickly rushed him to a nearby private hospital for emergency care.
Doctors at the facility said Raila was unresponsive when he arrived.
They performed several procedures and used machines to stabilise him, but despite their efforts, his condition worsened. After a short while, he was declared dead.
Medical officials later confirmed that Raila Odinga had died from cardiac arrest, a sudden heart failure that can cause death within minutes if not treated immediately.
His body is currently being preserved at the hospital as Kenyan and Indian authorities coordinate arrangements to return him home.
Raila’s death has sent shockwaves across Kenya and beyond.
The veteran politician was admired for his long fight for democracy and justice.
Messages of sorrow and respect continue to pour in from world leaders and citizens mourning a man many describe as the voice of the people.
