Maurice Ogeta, the long-serving personal bodyguard of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, has penned a touching message in memory of the man he served for nearly two decades.

Ogeta, who had been by Raila’s side through thick and thin, described the late opposition leader as a mentor, father figure, and loyal friend who shaped his life both personally and professionally.

In his heartfelt message, Ogeta recalled the bond that grew between him and the veteran politician over 18 years of service.

“The trust and friendship we built went beyond work. You were more than a boss — you became a father and a true comrade,” he wrote.

The experienced aide revealed that he was with Raila Odinga in India, where the ODM leader was receiving medical treatment before his untimely death on October 15, 2025.

Ogeta said those final moments were some of the most painful in his life, as he witnessed the passing of a man he deeply admired.

He described working with Raila as a life-changing experience, saying the opportunity helped him grow into a better leader and person.

“Serving you taught me humility, patience, and courage. You believed in a free and equal continent, much like Nelson Mandela,” Ogeta shared in his tribute.

Ogeta was also among the team that organized Raila’s body repatriation from India back to Kenya.

When the plane carrying Raila’s remains landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Ogeta was visibly emotional as he joined mourners to receive his fallen leader.

During the public viewing of the body, he was seen breaking down in tears as leaders and supporters comforted him. President William Ruto was among those who consoled him during the emotional event.

Ogeta’s loyalty to Raila had been tested before. In 2023, during the height of the Azimio protests, he was abducted by unknown individuals, interrogated, and later released. Despite the ordeal, he returned to continue serving Raila with dedication.

In his final words, Ogeta thanked Raila for being a dependable father, mentor, and patriot, saying his legacy would continue to inspire generations across Africa.
