A man accused of killing a gardener at State House, Nairobi, has been detained for 14 days as police continue investigations into the shocking incident.

The suspect, who was arrested shortly after the killing, told the court that he committed the crime because he was “sent by Satan.”

The suspect, identified as Dennis Onyango, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi at the Milimani Law Courts.

The prosecution asked the court to allow them two weeks to complete investigations, saying the case involves sensitive areas and requires more time.

According to police, the murder happened within the State House compound, which is one of the most secure government facilities in the country.

The victim, who worked as a gardener, was reportedly attacked with a sharp object and died on the spot.

Detectives said they need more time to carry out a mental health assessment on Onyango, record statements from witnesses, and analyze CCTV footage from the scene.

They also plan to take the suspect for psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial.

The prosecution told the court that releasing Onyango at this stage would interfere with investigations, as the crime took place in a highly protected government area.

They also said that the nature of the murder raises security concerns that must be handled carefully.

In response, Onyango told the court that he did not plan the killing and that “Satan sent” him to do it. His strange statement left many in court shocked.

The magistrate said that the comment is one of the reasons a mental examination is necessary before deciding the next steps.

Magistrate Ochoi granted the police 14 days to detain Onyango at the Kilimani Police Station while investigations continue.

The case will be mentioned again once the investigation report and medical evaluation are completed.

The shocking murder has drawn public attention because of where it happened — inside State House, which is heavily guarded.

Security officials have assured the public that the area remains safe and that the incident was an isolated case.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family is calling for justice and has urged the authorities to ensure a full investigation is carried out to uncover the truth behind the killing.
