Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero became the talk of the day after he was caught on camera sleeping during a National Assembly Committee on Education meeting at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The photo, captured by Collins Oduor, showed the MP leaning on his chair with his eyes closed as other members listened to presentations by KICD officials.
The meeting was part of an oversight visit to check the progress of curriculum development and the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
After the photo went viral, many Kenyans took to social media to share their thoughts. Some joked that the MP might have been dreaming about how to improve education in Kibra.
Others criticized him, saying he should take his duties more seriously. “This is not the time to sleep when the future of our children is being discussed,” one user commented on X (formerly Twitter).
However, some people defended him, saying that parliamentary duties can be very tiring.
“These leaders attend several meetings in a day, sometimes from early morning to late evening. It’s easy for anyone to doze off,” another user said.
A source close to the MP claimed that Orero had been feeling unwell but still decided to attend the meeting because of his commitment to education matters.
“He did not want to miss the session since it involved important discussions on CBC,” the source said.
Peter Orero, who is serving his first term as Kibra MP, is known for supporting youth empowerment, sports, and education programs in his constituency.
He has been working to improve learning facilities and promote talent development among young people.
Despite the light moment, the Education Committee continued its discussions on improving the quality of education in Kenya. The members also promised to ensure that learning materials reach all schools on time.
