Kalonzo Musyoka has found himself at the centre of a fierce public debate after he led a united opposition in snubbing the national Mashujaa Day celebrations held in his own political stronghold of Kitui.
The move, which saw other top leaders like Martha Karua and former DP Rigathi Gachagua also stay away, was intended as a political statement but has been met with a deeply divided reaction from Kenyans online.
Kalonzo Musyoka faced the most intense criticism for his decision, with many Kenyans immediately drawing a sharp and unflattering comparison between him and the late Raila Odinga.
A now-viral comment that captured the mood of many read, "This was the difference between Raila and Kalonzo. Bitter could not stop Raila from attending such functions," as many questioned whether he has the same unifying spirit as his late mentor.
The United Opposition leaders, instead of attending the state event, took to social media to honour the nation's heroes, with most dedicating their messages to the late Raila Odinga.
Martha Karua declared that "a shujaa has fallen, but the dream endures," while Eugene Wamalwa used the day to condemn the new Computer Misuse Bill, calling it a law designed to "protect power from criticism" and a betrayal of Raila's fight for freedom.
Kenyans, however, were completely split in their reactions, with thousands defending the leaders' absence. Many argued that it was the right decision, with some stating, "They are still mourning," while others felt it was wise to "keep off your enemies."
The most blunt response came from those who simply didn't care, with one user writing, "We didn't even notice," turning the opposition's intended protest into a subject of national debate.
