The shocking discovery caused anger among locals who accused the police of ignoring their calls for help.
Witnesses say the child was still fresh when it was found, suggesting the mother might have delivered it earlier that morning before leaving it in the cold.
According to locals, several young men and women passing by noticed the baby lying at the gate without any cover.
They tried to save it but soon realized it was already lifeless, most likely due to exposure to the morning cold.
“We found the baby on the ground, completely uncovered. It must have been born that same night. We tried calling the police, but they took too long to respond,” one witness said.
After waiting for hours without any officer arriving, the angry youth dragged large stones and tree branches onto the road, completely blocking traffic.
Vehicles heading both ways were stuck for nearly four hours as protesters demanded immediate police action.
“We didn’t want to cause chaos, but the police only respond when there is pressure. We blocked the road so they could come and collect the baby,” another protester explained.
The protest caused a long traffic jam stretching from Zambezi to Gitaru, with frustrated motorists forced to wait until officers from Kikuyu Sub-County arrived around midday.
Police later removed the body and took it to the nearby mortuary as investigations began to identify the child’s mother.
Residents now suspect the woman who abandoned the baby could be living in the area.
They expressed disappointment that she chose to leave the infant instead of seeking help.
“No matter how hard life is, there are always people willing to assist. Abandoning a newborn like that is heartbreaking,” said a local elder.
Police have urged anyone with information about the mother to report to the nearest station as investigations continue.
