The Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa erupted into a fiery political moment after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna delivered a hard-hitting message aimed squarely at President William Ruto.

In a speech that electrified the crowd, Sifuna reminded the nation that the wounds left by the 2023 anti-government protests remain open within the ODM fraternity.

He accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of unleashing excessive force on demonstrators, insisting that the party has not forgotten the violence endured during those months of unrest.

From Crowning Himself ODM Secretary General to Fiery Nairobi Senator: Edwin Sifuna

Sifuna’s address blended nostalgia, anger, and renewed determination.

Casting himself as a defender of ODM’s legacy, he made it clear that the opposition would not abandon its role in confronting what he described as state intimidation.

His words resonated with thousands, drawing loud cheers as he declared that the movement still carries “unfinished business” regarding justice for protest victims and accountability for state actions.

The senator also seized the moment to champion ODM’s next generation of leaders.

He rejected claims that the party lacks a strong lineup for the 2027 elections, pointing to rising political figures such as Crystal Asige and the youthful “Drogba” from Embakasi South.

According to Sifuna, ODM’s strength lies in its energetic youth base, an asset he believes can propel any chosen candidate to the presidency.

His bold proclamation that he “sees presidents” among them appeared to signal the party’s shift toward broader leadership beyond Raila Odinga’s longstanding influence.

Turning inward, Sifuna criticized what he called a culture of pleading for rights rather than asserting them.

He urged supporters to reclaim ODM’s activist spirit, reminding them of the young people who braved the streets during difficult moments.

As he handed the podium to deputy party leader and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, the anniversary took on the tone of a strategic reset.
