Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has surprised many by expressing strong support for President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race, even after aligning with opposition leaders in recent events.

His remarks come days after he was removed from his influential position as Senate Majority Whip by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance team.

Speaking on Hot 96 FM on Monday, December 8, Khalwale said he sees no reason why President Ruto cannot win a second term in 2027.

He noted that historically, Kenya’s presidents have been re-elected, and Ruto is no exception unless his political strategy fails.

“The country has a history of presidents serving a second term. Ruto can also win, but he must manage his politics well. Even when you are leading, poor decisions can cost you,” Khalwale explained.

Although Khalwale previously criticized some government policies and backed opposition candidates, he emphasized that Ruto remains his preferred choice for the presidency.

During the recent Malava parliamentary by-election, he supported Seth Panyako of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), going against his party’s choice.

His involvement in the mini-polls and association with opposition figures led to his removal from the Senate leadership position.

Despite these political disagreements, Khalwale highlighted that his support for Ruto has not changed.

He said the president’s achievements and development projects make his re-election campaign easier.

“The more development the president delivers, the easier it becomes for me to gather support for his re-election,” he said, recalling remarks he made during the funeral of Malulu Injendi.

Khalwale also stressed that the 2027 elections have not yet become difficult for Ruto, clarifying earlier warnings he made about potential challenges.

He believes that with careful planning, Ruto is well positioned to secure a second term.

This statement comes amid speculation about shifting alliances and political strategies ahead of the 2027 polls.

Khalwale’s support, despite recent opposition alignment, shows a nuanced approach to politics where personal conviction can influence public endorsements.
