A Kenyan artist who spent nearly 30 years in Jamaica, Mazola wa Mwashighadi, has tragically been killed during a violent robbery in Billy’s Bay, Treasure Beach.

The 61-year-old was reportedly attacked shortly after midnight and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shocking incident has left both Jamaica and Kenya mourning the loss of a beloved artist.

Mazola was known for his gentle nature, creativity, and dedication to helping his community. Before his death, he had been organizing a free community art workshop to assist residents in recovering from Hurricane Melissa.

Many friends and locals remember him as humble, generous, and deeply committed to using art to heal and inspire others.

Born and raised in Kenya, Mazola moved to Jamaica nearly three decades ago. There, he became a respected sculptor and multi-disciplinary artist.

His works reflected Kenyan heritage, the Black diaspora, and themes of spiritual healing.

Between 1997 and 1998, he attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, where he studied free-form sculpture on a fellowship.

Mazola initially worked from a small studio in Gordon Town, St. Andrew, before settling in Treasure Beach. Over the years, his work gained recognition both locally and internationally.

Beyond his art, he was a trained teacher and spent increasing time mentoring and supporting his community. His final project—a Community Art Healing Therapy Workshop—was scheduled to run from December 8 to 13, helping locals express resilience after the hurricane.

Friends and colleagues remember him not only for his artistry but also for his devotion to his family. Mazola leaves behind children in Kenya and a teenage daughter in Jamaica, whom he loved dearly.

He balanced fatherhood with his artistic pursuits, often sharing stories about his family with pride.

The Black River Criminal Investigation Branch has launched a manhunt for his killers as investigations continue. The loss has left Treasure Beach, usually a quiet and peaceful community, in shock.

Mazola’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of protecting those who dedicate themselves to positive change.

He will be remembered not only for his creativity but also for the compassion and peace he brought to everyone around him.
