Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has stirred political debate after declaring that the Central Kenya region should not pursue the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Instead, she publicly endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, citing the need for national balance and inclusivity in leadership.

Wamuchomba made the remarks while visiting Matiang’i at his Nyansiongo home in Nyamira County.

Addressing supporters, she argued that the Mt. Kenya region has already benefited substantially from past administrations and should allow other communities an opportunity to lead the country.

She questioned the long-held belief that Central Kenya must always produce a presidential candidate, insisting that leadership should rotate for the sake of national cohesion.

The outspoken legislator pointed to the ten-year presidency of the late Mwai Kibaki and the subsequent tenure of President Uhuru Kenyatta as periods when the region enjoyed major gains, particularly in infrastructure development.

According to her, those benefits demonstrate that Central Kenya has had its fair share of national leadership advantages.

Wamuchomba described herself as a leader unafraid to speak her mind and stressed that Kenya’s future depends on equitable representation across regions.

She said her support for Matiang’i was driven by the belief that the country needs a balanced approach to power-sharing, adding that Central Kenya should consciously step back from presidential ambitions in the next election cycle.

Her endorsement came during a meeting hosted by Matiang’i that brought together leaders and representatives from the Kuria community.

During the engagement, participants raised concerns over long-standing issues such as land disputes, marginalization, and limited inclusion in government appointments and development projects.

Dr. Matiang’i, 57, previously served as Education and Interior Cabinet Secretary under President Uhuru Kenyatta. In October 2025, the Jubilee Party formally endorsed him as its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 elections.

Wamuchomba’s remarks add a new and unexpected dimension to the evolving political landscape ahead of the polls.
