Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, mother of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, has called for a postmortem on her daughter’s body.

She says this is the only way to know exactly how Betty died. Joyce spoke during a Facebook Live session on the night of December 6, 2025, expressing her deep worry about unanswered questions surrounding her daughter’s death.

“I need to know what really happened to my daughter. A postmortem will show the truth,” Joyce said.

The family conflict extends beyond questions about Betty’s death. Joyce has publicly warned her daughter’s widower, Hiram Gitau, also known as Tash, not to claim any of Betty’s property or belongings.

She says she is the only legally recognized next of kin and wants all official documents, including the burial permit and death certificate, corrected to reflect her name.

Joyce explained that she had shared her identification card with Tash under an agreement to handle post-burial matters together, but she claims he has misused it. Her main goal is to protect her grandchildren and secure their future.

She has also asked that the children be removed from their current home immediately. Joyce said she is willing to fund their relocation personally and suggested they should live with her other daughter, Wanjiku.

She expressed fear for the safety of Betty’s children if they continue living in the current house, questioning Tash’s ability to care for them.

Regarding Betty’s property, Joyce confirmed she was aware of her daughter’s investments, including land parcels.

She denied reports that Betty had requested to be buried only in Murang’a, insisting instead that she should be buried on land they purchased together.

Joyce said all personal items left by Betty belong to the children, not to anyone currently living in the house, and she promised to recover everything for their benefit.

Joyce’s statement comes as the family continues to deal with the shock of Betty’s sudden death. She emphasized that her actions are motivated by love for her daughter and concern for her grandchildren.

She wants the law to recognize her as the true next of kin and ensure that the children’s rights are protected.
