Thieves Masquerading as Bodaboda Riders On The Rise in Nairobi

Nairobi residents are facing a new wave of crime as more thieves disguise themselves as motorcycle taxi riders, popularly known as boda bodas.

These impostors are targeting unsuspecting members of the public, snatching phones, money, and other valuables.

In one recent case, a man was using his phone at a gate when a rider appeared to be asking for directions.

Before he could react, the rider grabbed the phone and sped away. Such incidents are becoming increasingly common, leaving victims frustrated and fearful.

Many Kenyans are now questioning how to distinguish genuine boda boda riders from criminals.

With the growing use of ride-hailing services, experts warn that passengers and pedestrians are at greater risk of falling victim to these scams.

“I once had my phone snatched while I was in a matatu,” says Kioko, a Nairobi resident.

“The thief pretended to maneuver through traffic on a boda boda, but it was all a trick to take my phone.”

He claims to have lost two phones in similar situations.

Law enforcement experts say part of the problem is reduced policing in public transport areas.

Boda boda riders often ignore traffic rules, such as riding on sidewalks, which allows thieves to blend in easily and act unpredictably.

Evelyne Kioko, a law student at Strathmore University, suggests that regulating boda bodas like matatus under SACCOs could help.

“If riders operated in organized groups, it would be easier to track down rogue riders and ensure accountability,” she explains.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has consistently reminded riders to follow traffic rules and maintain safety standards.

Authorities have highlighted the need for an attitude change among riders and passengers to reduce accidents and thefts.

Victims describe how thieves take advantage of chaotic traffic situations.

“They act as if they are escaping congestion, but really, they are looking for someone to rob,” one victim explained.

As reports of theft rise, public attention is turning to the police and NTSA to act quickly.

Citizens are urging authorities to implement stronger safety measures, improve rider identification, and enforce stricter rules to prevent criminals from exploiting the loopholes in the transport system.
