Suba South Member of Parliament Caroli Omondi has announced that he will not seek re-election on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the 2027 general election, signaling a major political shift after years of association with the party.

Omondi, who previously served as Raila Odinga’s Chief of Staff during his tenure as Prime Minister, said he will instead contest under a new political party that he is yet to unveil.

Speaking to Nation Africa, the legislator said his decision followed prolonged reflection on the state of the ODM party.

He cited a long history of flawed party primaries and what he described as a leadership vacuum following the death of the party’s founder and longtime leader, Raila Odinga.

According to Omondi, these challenges have made it difficult for the party to function effectively and fairly.

He also pointed to past disputes with ODM as a key factor behind his move.

Omondi recalled that in 2017 he protested the party’s decision to award the Suba South parliamentary ticket to John Mbadi after contested primaries.

He further alleged that during the 2014 by-elections, he was pressured to step down in favor of Moses Kajwang after the ticket was irregularly allocated.

Omondi revealed that he had planned to leave ODM as early as 2022 but shelved the decision following intervention by the late Raila Odinga, who urged him to remain in the party.

With Odinga no longer in the picture, Omondi said the underlying issues were never resolved.

He also accused current ODM party leader Oburu Oginga of lacking independence, alleging that the party’s leadership is being influenced by external forces.

Omondi maintained that his next political move would be guided by the need for fairness, transparency, and accountable leadership.
