The late former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo continues to dominate online discussions following the emergence of a WhatsApp message he allegedly sent to a close female friend shortly before his death.
The message, shared publicly by his political protégé, has triggered mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.
Jirongo died in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway after his Mercedes-Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a bus.
The incident, confirmed by the bus driver, shocked the country and raised questions due to differing accounts from individuals who last interacted with the veteran politician.
Days after his death, Lorna Simatwa, a young politician widely described as Jirongo’s protégé, shared screenshots of their private WhatsApp conversations.
In the messages, Jirongo appeared supportive and encouraging, expressing willingness to guide and back Simatwa’s political ambitions.
She accompanied the screenshots with an emotional tribute, describing him as a mentor who believed in her potential.
The leaked messages quickly went viral, with many netizens praising Jirongo for mentoring young leaders, while others questioned the decision to make private conversations public so soon after his death.
Some users urged respect for the family’s privacy as burial preparations continue.
The situation was further complicated by rumours linking Jirongo to media personality Liz Jackson.
Online speculation claimed that the vehicle involved in the fatal accident belonged to Jackson and that the two had an intimate relationship.
Jackson, however, declined to address the claims, stating that she did not wish to comment on the matter.
As tributes continue to pour in, Jirongo is being remembered as a seasoned politician, businessman, and mentor.
While the leaked WhatsApp messages have reignited debate around his final days, many Kenyans say his legacy should be defined by his public service rather than online speculation.
