Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has claimed that President William Ruto is uncomfortable with criticism and often mistakes public dissent for personal hatred, a perception he says is misleading and dangerous to democratic discourse.

Speaking during a public event in Trans Nzoia County, Natembeya said the growing dissatisfaction among Kenyans is not driven by malice but by frustration over unaddressed concerns affecting livelihoods.

He argued that leaders must be willing to listen to hard truths rather than dismissing criticism as hostility.

“President Ruto hates being told the truth and that is why he thinks Kenyans hate him,” Natembeya told the gathering.

He noted that citizens have a constitutional right to speak out when they feel policies and decisions are not working in their favour.

According to the governor, silencing or ignoring such voices only widens the gap between the government and the people.

Natembeya pointed to the rising cost of living, unemployment and heavy taxation as some of the issues fuelling public anger.

He said Kenyans are demanding accountability and practical solutions, not public relations responses or political blame games. The governor added that honest feedback should be embraced as a tool for better governance.

The outspoken county boss warned that leadership thrives on openness and humility, urging the Head of State to reflect on the message coming from the public.

He said history has shown that governments which fail to listen to their citizens often face deeper resistance and instability.

Natembeya also defended the role of leaders who speak out, saying constructive criticism should not be equated with rebellion or disrespect. He challenged national leaders to engage Kenyans sincerely and address their concerns head-on.

His remarks come amid heightened political tension and public protests over economic hardships, with the Kenya Kwanza administration facing mounting pressure to ease the burden on households.

Natembeya’s comments are likely to spark further debate on leadership, accountability and the space for dissent in the country’s political landscape.
